I really noticed that in ZvT in the past I would always play the standard 3-hat muta and it became really set in stone for me but when I was doing some lessons with Jaeyun he showed me a build that is quite good to use at times especially for myself knowing that I would do good with mutas for a while trying to keep the Terran in his base in order for me to get going on my 2nd expo but I also realized that there would be times I would lose to push right before my mutas popped or even after they popped the Terran just went balls out and pushed me anyways. This build is more focused on getting a fast 3rd and skipping mutas but getting lurkers to defend and teching to a hive quite quickly. There are many variations and you can change any build order of anything in order to establish yourself and what makes your comfortable I pretty much open with this:
11 & 12 drone are sent to build hat and scout.
12-hatch
Send out 2nd drone to secondary base.
13-pool
12-gas
13-hatch (2nd base)
@100 Gas Lair
@100 Gas Ling Speed
@50% Lair drop hydra den down (I usually build my den at my 2nd base with first drone)
From here you pretty much upgrade lurker upg ASAP and defend your 2nd ramp with a few lurks and also defend your natural with lurks/sunks/lings.
the 13 pool is risky but also more economical just hope they don't 8-rax
Once you get going you want to go for a quick hive to get defilers out to defend when they come with tanks, also drop down a spire somewhere in the mix for scourges.
I actually prefer to get my hive going before my evos for upgrades but it pretty much comes down to timing of when you want to do so.
This is just a minor variation of this build but I feel more comfortable with this at times especially if the 2nd base isn't scouted right away and I am able to safely get lurks to defend, also need to get nydus connections to other bases and so forth. I also like to put a sunk and a lurk or 2 in my extra bases to defend the drops that come later in the game.
This is just a build I wanted to share seeing as I have had some minor success with it and I personally don't like ZvT so I had to change up what I was doing in regards to just always going 2-hat muta or 3-hat muta.
